Welcome to Sutter Middle School, a neighborhood school seeking to meet the needs of all students by offering both comprehensive services and personalization for a diverse student body of nearly 800 students. Last school year we opened up the San Fernando Valley’s first middle school Linked Learning Engineering Academy and this coming school year, 2018-19 we will open a STEAM and Leadership Magnet for eighty-five sixth grade students.
At Sutter Middle School we take a team approach to education. In order to successfully transition students from elementary to middle school, we seek to personalize learning for students by programming students into interdisciplinary teams. Teachers work closely to collaborate with the families of their teams. Teachers are afforded a common conference period to meet, plan, and conference with parents. Each grade level is supported by a counselor who matriculates with the students from sixth through eighth grade. As a small middle school with a diverse student population of gifted/talented, English learners, and special education students, we strive to provide extensive campus-wide supplemental services. In addition to our counselors, an Intervention Coordinator, School Nurse, School Psychologist, and a Pupil Services and Attendance (PSA) Counselor provide needed services. A Parent Center Director offers a variety of workshops and programs for parents throughout the school year.
We work with numerous community-based organizations to offer students and their families services during and beyond the school day. Many of our partners support an active student life and clubs on campus. For the past two years, we have participated in the LA’s Promise Fund’s Girls Build LA Challenge. This year our girls placed first among the twenty-five participating Los Angeles area middle schools. Youth Services Plus offers students recreational activities, sports, homework assistance, and specialty programs such as robotics. Through the YS Plus Sutter MS students regularly compete in District-wide athletic tournaments. We are pleased to announce that Sutter Middle School Girls Soccer team won the 2018 LA84/Beyond the Bell LA City Middle School Championship. Our Jefferson Awards Foundation Students in Action group were recently recognized by Councilmember Bob Blumenfield at a Los Angeles City Council meeting for their community service projects.
Our goal is to create a modern, student-driven school to meet the needs of the 21st century. For the past two years, Sutter Middle School was selected to be a practitioner school by the District’s Instructional Technology Initiative. The progress made with our work with ITI will continue as we embark on our next initiative becoming a Verizon Innovative Learning school. Sutter Middle School is proud to announce our selection as one of a hundred middle schools nationwide to participate in the Verizon Innovative Learning schools’ initiative beginning in the 2018-19 school year! Launched in 2012, Verizon Innovative Learning schools equips students and teachers with personal tablets and Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, giving them 24/7 access to the internet for learning in the classroom, at home and beyond. This initiative also provides a full-time, dedicated instructional coach to train teachers on effectively integrating technology into all aspects of learning, across all subjects.
As we aim to effectively communicate with our students and their families we send home a weekly Connect ED message reminding parents of activities. Please consult our website calendar which is updated daily. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us 818-773-5800 from 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.
